Where I practice
I was born and raised in Michigan, and after completing my residency and fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh, I moved to Hawaii to join the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group (HPMG). I was inspired to join the medical group after seeing how the doctors provide excellent care in an efficient manner while maintaining the highest level of integrity. I felt I would be able to practice medicine in a similar fashion, which would be in alignment with my personal values. There are several physicians in my extended family, which includes my wife who is a pediatrician. We both enjoy interacting with people to help them address their health concerns. Medicine is well suited to me, as it allows me to combine my interest in science with the values of my upbringing, which emphasized helping and serving others.
About my practice
I am board certified in ophthalmology and fellowship trained in the subspecialty areas of cornea, external diseases, and refractive surgery (laser vision correction). I currently serve as the chief of ophthalmology for HPMG, and am the medical director of the Honolulu Ambulatory Surgery Center. Ophthalmology suits me because I am able to enjoy long-lasting physician-patient relationships. My ability to perform state-of-the-art surgery is also very satisfying.I believe that every person is unique, and tailor my interactions and explanations to each individual. For every patient, I aim to provide the best and most efficient medical and surgical treatment in a caring and supportive manner. Working at HPMG, I am surrounded by so many intelligent and caring physicians, and our interactions allow us to share knowledge and practice approaches that benefit our patients.
How I thrive
Coaching my two sons’ youth sports teams keeps me active and I exercise in moderation. Not only am I able to provide them and their teammates with fun and exercise, I’m also able to model good behaviors to help them develop into successful, respectful young adults.
