Where I practice
I was born and raised in Kiel, Germany and lived there through medical school. I was introduced to the United States when I traveled to the San Francisco Bay Area as an exchange student during high school. I forged such a strong bond with the States that I embarked on an unforgettable nine-week tour after I graduated. This tour included a visit to Hawaii, where I met the friendliest people in the midst of the Pacific. I was ecstatic to return to Hawaii years later for my pediatric residency. After completing my residency, I moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, then back to Kiel for additional training and work. When I received the opportunity to work with the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group (HPMG) as a pediatric cardiologist, I simply could not resist returning to the warm, beautiful state that made such a lasting impression on me in my youth. I happily reside here with my lovely wife and our four children: three daughters and a son.
About my practice
Scientific curiosity and wanting to work directly with others led me to choose a career in medicine. I felt a need to help people on their journey through the ups and downs of life. My own experiences as a pediatric cardiology patient with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome prompted my interest in the cardiology field. Pediatrics became my passion when I realized how genuinely honest and sincere children are, and how much I enjoyed working with and being around them every day. What a blessing. My philosophy of care is to put the interests of my patients and their family first. In doing so, I approach my patients as a friend by making small talk rather than jumping straight to the problem. I try to ease the anxiety that often accompanies patients and their families, and strive to build a relationship so that we can work together. I am interested in my patients as people, not just as a medical issue or complaint.I believe that it’s important to be aware of your limitations and know when to ask colleagues for assistance in the management of complex problems. At HPMG, I am able to do this quite easily. To me, HPMG is like a big community of colleagues and friends where everyone has great respect for one another. It is unlike any other medical organization I have practiced with before and I have had very positive experiences as an HPMG physician.
How I thrive
Being active helps me to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I am hoping to bring tennis back more into my life, and every so often, I play a few holes of golf. I enjoy music and most of all, love to spend time with family. We explore the islands and hang out with friends, which all help me to stay balanced.
