About me
I was born in California and grew up in Napa Valley, where my family still lives. I went to Union College in Nebraska for my bachelor's degree and Loma Linda University for medical school. I then did a transitional year internship at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego and an occupational medicine residency at the University of California, San Francisco, serving as chief resident. As part of my residency, I also attended the University of California, Berkeley for a Master of Public Health. I'm board-certified in occupational medicine and a member of the American Board of Preventive Medicine and the National Society of Leadership and Success.
While stationed in Kaneohe with the Navy, I practiced urgent care in Lanikai and was a flight surgeon for both Navy and Marine Corps aviation squadrons. In Okinawa, I was the department head and sole occupational medicine physician at the largest overseas naval hospital. Additionally, I held multiple roles, including public health emergency officer for Marine Corps Installations Pacific, co-chair of the credentialing review committee, and chair of the physician well-being committee.
During medical school, I met my wife – who was raised in Kailua and Waimanalo – and is now an ultrasound technician. We lived on Oahu while I was a military flight surgeon and were so happy to return home to raise our three boys close to family and friends.
About my practice
My mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis when I was in intermediate school and later went through a battle with leiomyosarcoma. She's been extremely positive throughout her journey, a guiding light and inspiration to me to serve others.
With my degree in international rescue and relief, I considered a career in global public health, providing human services and counseling. However, when I became an emergency medical technician, I realized that I felt most at home in that setting. After being accepted into physician assistant school, I was encouraged by my biology teacher to consider becoming a doctor instead.
I love being in a field encompassing medical care, legal compliance, advocacy for safer workplaces, and human-centered, comprehensive design of processes and systems.
My research, presentations, and publishing have covered topics such as exposure to household cleaning products; wildfire smoke hazards; pediatric public health and environmental exposure; the benefit of physical therapy in the context of workers' compensation; and COVID-19 occupational prevention, exposure, management, advocacy, and worker rights.
How I thrive
I strive to maintain a healthy work-life balance to pursue my hobbies and spend quality time with my wife and boys. I enjoy aquascaping and terrarium building, reading, meditating, hiking, mountain biking, swimming, traveling, and running Honolulu Marathons and races for the Hawaii Ultra Running Team.

Kaiser Permanente uses the same quality, member experience, or cost-related measures to select practitioners and facilities in Marketplace Silver-tier plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business and uses the same geographic distribution consideration to select hospitals in Marketplace plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business. The measures may include, but are not limited to, HEDIS/CAHPS performance, member/patient complaints, patient safety scores, hospital quality measures, and geographic need. Members enrolled in KFHP Marketplace plans have access to all professional, institutional and ancillary health care providers who participate in KFHP plans' contracted provider network, in accordance with the terms of the members' KFHP plan of coverage. All Kaiser Permanente Medical Group physicians and network physicians are subject to the same quality review processes and certifications.
A narrow network is defined as a tailored, tiered or high-performance network that has 80 percent or less overlap with a health plan’s broadest network offered to a member in any type of plan offered by that health plan. Kaiser Permanente does not have a narrow network with respect to its Marketplace plans. Members enrolled in Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) Marketplace plans have access to the same provider networks as members enrolled in all other KFHP plans.
