About me
I was born and raised in Houston, Texas. I first came to Hawaii as a college student to do research on diabetes and obesity in people of Japanese-Hawaiian ancestry. During that summer I formed lifelong friendships, and visited the islands many times thereafter.
I earned my Bachelor of Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and my medical degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. I then did an internship in general surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, a residency in anesthesiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, where I was chief resident, and a fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology at Texas Children's Hospital. I’m now certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology and the Pediatric Anesthesiology Board.
After completing my medical training, I accepted a position in Honolulu and have loved practicing here ever since.
About my practice
As an undergraduate I became fascinated by the connection between diet and health, and that inspired me to pursue a career in medicine. I was drawn to anesthesiology during a critical care rotation when I was researching nutritional influences on critically ill patients. I discovered that there was more to the field than I had realized. I loved helping to alleviate patients’ anxiety, and I welcomed the challenge of balancing pain management with the appropriate anesthetic. My other professional interests include medical journalism and global surgery and anesthesia.
For my undergraduate thesis I studied weight gain after dietary changes and cold exposure. My later research on collapsed lung was published in the journal Anesthesiology.
At meetings of the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia I gave presentations on social media in medicine and anesthetic management of adrenal gland tumors. I’ve spoken on global health training in residency programs and was honored a few years ago to be included in an Aloha Medical Mission to Myanmar.
To stay current in my field, I read anesthesiology journals and articles published by the Doximity Medical Network. Membership in professional organizations such as the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia also gives me access to the most up-to-date information.
The team-oriented approach used by Hawaii Permanente Medical Group was attractive to me. When I was being interviewed, I met interesting and collegial practitioners from various fields, and I could see that this would be a great place to work.
My philosophy is to always do what's best for the patient. Anesthesiologists have just a few minutes with their patients before surgery. I use this pre-op period to provide education about what’s about to happen so that they feel comfortable before they go off to sleep and when they wake up.
How I thrive
Nutrition, health, and maintaining a positive frame of mind are important to me. To stay fit, I hike, surf, do Pilates, run, and follow a healthy diet. I enjoy cooking, crafting, spending time with family, and participating in science fairs.

Kaiser Permanente uses the same quality, member experience, or cost-related measures to select practitioners and facilities in Marketplace Silver-tier plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business and uses the same geographic distribution consideration to select hospitals in Marketplace plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business. The measures may include, but are not limited to, HEDIS/CAHPS performance, member/patient complaints, patient safety scores, hospital quality measures, and geographic need. Members enrolled in KFHP Marketplace plans have access to all professional, institutional and ancillary health care providers who participate in KFHP plans' contracted provider network, in accordance with the terms of the members' KFHP plan of coverage. All Kaiser Permanente Medical Group physicians and network physicians are subject to the same quality review processes and certifications.
A narrow network is defined as a tailored, tiered or high-performance network that has 80 percent or less overlap with a health plan’s broadest network offered to a member in any type of plan offered by that health plan. Kaiser Permanente does not have a narrow network with respect to its Marketplace plans. Members enrolled in Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) Marketplace plans have access to the same provider networks as members enrolled in all other KFHP plans.
