About me
My name is Dr. Eshwar Kapur, and I am a fellowship-trained sports medicine physician with additional board certifications in family medicine and lifestyle medicine. I have experience working for Kaiser Permanente dating back to 2006 and have been a full-time partner with Kaiser Permanente San Diego since 2016. Outside of my practice, I also have experience at Point Loma Nazarene University as both adjunct faculty and medical director for the Master of Athletic Training Program.
I have extensive experience treating athletes and active individuals of all ages and abilities, including elite competitors such as the Philadelphia Phillies Major League Baseball team. As an elite runner myself with multiple academic certifications in sports medicine, I have become a leading expert in running injuries. I have spoken at numerous running events and provided medical coverage for several major national races worldwide. While working at Kaiser Permanente in Northern California, I developed a comprehensive sports performance program that included a runner's clinic offering in-depth gait analysis to help runners and walkers of all abilities enhance their performance and prevent injuries.
Biography
I was born in Philadelphia and spent most of my childhood on the East Coast. I have an undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia, where I was a Division I varsity athlete in cross-country and track and field. I completed medical school at Ohio State University, family medicine residency at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center in New Jersey, and a fellowship in sports medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Pennsylvania. I have worked as a physician around the country in various capacities, including areas of high need in rural continental United States and in Hawaii. I worked at Kaiser Permanente in Northern California for 5 years before moving to San Diego.
About my practice
As an orthopedic specialist, I evaluate and treat a wide variety of sports injuries and musculoskeletal conditions, including complex diagnoses that fall between orthopedic subspecialties. I offer balanced, unbiased counseling regarding conservative and surgical treatment options. As a full-time orthopedic specialist, I have direct access to more than 30 surgical subspecialist colleagues who can evaluate you for surgical procedures, when needed.
I have extensive sports medicine experience with special expertise for musculoskeletal issues in runners, throwers, and surfers. Beyond caring for athletes and active individuals, I have created innovations for healthcare delivery and treatment algorithms for people with osteoarthritis, including helping to develop an educational seminar for Kaiser Permanente members specific to knee arthritis.
New members can request me at the time they get a referral or when they call our department for consultation. I feel fortunate to work at Kaiser Permanente. It is my privilege to care for our members, and I look forward to working with you to care for your health and wellness.
How I thrive
My experiences as an elite athlete with 30+ years of injury-free running have set the foundation for my approach to my daily life. I am a strong believer in health and wellness as a powerful tool for both physical and spiritual well-being. I prioritize a healthy and balanced diet and exercise. I run 6 to 7 days a week, surf 5 to 7 days a week, and lift weights 5 days a week for work-life balance and to better relate to many members. Outside of physical activity, I also thrive through travel and volunteerism with my wife. I am particularly passionate about initiatives that empower disabled athletes and artists.
