About me

Hello and welcome to my Web page! I am happy to have the chance to tell you about my practice and myself. I am a proud member of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Division of Sports Medicine at Kaiser Permanente’s Fontana Medical Center.

Biography

I was born in St. Louis, Missouri. After a brief stay in New Jersey, my family and I moved to Columbus, Ohio, where I was raised. After high school, I attended the University of Michigan and majored in mechanical engineering. My desire to work with people on a daily basis and improve their health led me to a career in medicine. I found orthopedic surgery to be the perfect application of the principles of engineering to my most passionate interest: the human body. I spent an additional year doing orthopedic surgery biomechanical research at the University of Michigan before returning home to The Ohio State University for medical school, where I finished in the top 10 percent of my class as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. From that point on, all of my efforts have been focused toward becoming an excellent surgeon, researcher, and teacher. Before joining Kaiser Permanente, I completed a six-year orthopedic surgery residency at UCLA, followed by a one-year advanced clinical sports medicine and shoulder fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. During my fellowship training, I had the opportunity to care for elite athletes from the NFL, NHL, MLB, and NCAA, which broadened my expertise. I was fortunate to learn new surgical techniques from many of the world leaders in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine. Over the course of my training, I have been very active in clinical and basic science research as well as the teaching of surgical techniques nationally. I’ve published over 50 scientific articles and book chapters on surgery.

About my practice

The goal of my sports orthopedic practice is to help patients improve their function and decrease their pain, allowing them to return to their work, hobbies, and sports. I treat people of all ages and specialize in minimally invasive arthroscopic procedures on the knee and shoulder. I believe in using the most current procedures based on up-to-date research for my patients, giving them the highest chance for success. I also place a strong emphasis on physical therapy, when appropriate, as many injuries can be successfully rehabilitated without surgery. I have a special interest in ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury, cartilage and ligamentous injuries in the knee, rotator cuff injuries, and instability of the shoulder joint. I have performed over 5,000 surgeries in my career to date.

How I thrive

Outside the hospital, I love to enjoy the beautiful landscape of California with my family and friends. I stay fit by hiking, mountain biking, weight training, snowboarding, and stand-up paddle boarding. In my spare time, I enjoy traveling around the world for fun and relaxation. I try to exercise five times a week, sleep well, and make a point to maintain a good nutritional balance in my diet. I have found that a healthy body and healthy mind go hand in hand every day.
