About me
Hello, and welcome to my Web page! My name is Dr. Sahana Huq, and I am a psychiatrist for Kaiser Permanente in Kern County. It is my hope that with a little more information about myself and my practice, you will feel encouraged to work with me to reach your health and wellness goals.
Biography
I was born and raised in Bangladesh, a country in the Indian subcontinent. When I was growing up, having a career was not necessarily a focus. I was just curious about people, and I enjoyed learning. My father, an engineer by profession but a lover of literature in his heart, introduced me to the world of books and encouraged free choice. And my mother has always been my most steadfast champion. They instilled the sense in me that everyone has a right to be who they are and a right to be treated with dignity and respect. After my father died of cancer when I was 12 years old, we depended on extended family, and that taught me greater lessons about people. I witnessed my grandmother’s grief at losing her son, and the depression she lived with the rest of her life. Even in her grief, she encouraged me to go into a medical profession and provide care for people who suffered like her son had. I got lucky and got in the top medical school in the country, Dhaka Medical College. I was not sure about specialty at that point. Mental health was not a thing people talked much about there yet. But as life brought me to this shore, I saw the opportunity to expand my understanding of people. I got lucky again and joined psychiatry residency at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center in Los Angeles. With a desire to serve the underserved population, I joined Kern County Mental Health (affiliated with Kern Medical) and worked there for 22 years. I taught and supervised psychiatry residents for 19 years, while also working as a per diem psychiatrist with Kaiser Permanente in Kern County for 11 years. My experience was invaluable and encouraged me to join Kaiser Permanente full-time.
