About me
I am a physician at Kaiser Permanente’s Los Angeles Medical Center, where I specialize in acute care surgery or emergency general surgery and critical care.
Biography
I grew up near Poughkeepsie, New York, but I have lived all over the United States. I have always had a keen interest in the sciences and wanted to be a doctor since seventh grade. I majored in biophysical chemistry at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire and then went to State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York, for medical school. I completed my general surgery residency and did two years of cardiac research at Emory. I then began a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee but decided to change my focus. I stayed on at Vanderbilt to complete an anesthesia critical care fellowship and, most recently, spent one year at Washington University in St. Louis as a junior faculty member in the division of acute and critical care surgery. My wife and I met in Nashville, but she is from Monterey, California. I also love California, so we were fortunate that I found my perfect job at the Los Angeles Medical Center.
About my practice
I am board certified in both general surgery and surgical critical care. My practice mostly consists of acute care surgery and critical care. The surgical part of my practice involves caring for members that have unexpected or urgent surgical problems, and my goal is to resolve the problem that brings them into the hospital. The most common operations I do are removal of the gallbladder and appendix, bowel obstructions, and hernia repairs. The critical care portion of my practice involves caring for very ill members in the intensive care unit, such as those on the ventilator, with bleeding or sepsis, as well as those undergoing cardiac surgery. I practice medicine based on evidence and current research, but I tailor my care and operations depending on the individual member’s unique problem and circumstances.
How I thrive
My wife and I enjoy traveling, cooking, and visiting friends and family. I love spending time in the outdoors and particularly enjoy hiking and mountaineering. I have 2 young children that are now a huge part of my life. They keep my wife and I very busy but are also an incredible amount of fun.
