About me
Hello, and welcome to my Web page! Thank you for considering me as your primary care physician; I look forward to getting to know you. I like to work in a cooperative partnership with my patients to help them make informed medical and lifestyle choices that work for them.
Biography
Growing up in Peru, I dreamed of one day becoming a doctor. That dream seemed to be shattered beyond repair when political changes and terrorism in Peru meant that people like myself could not attend a university. Instead, I took a huge risk and moved to New York, where I worked full-time during the day and attended college at night to get my undergraduate degree. In pursuit of my medical degree, I attended medical school at Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara and Ponce School of Medicine in Puerto Rico, and then did my residency in family medicine at UC San Francisco. As a bilingual physician, I have had the privilege of working with both English-speaking and Spanish-speaking patients, especially struggling Latinos whom I respect dearly. Prior to joining Kaiser Permanente, I worked in a medical clinic in Santa Paula and Fillmore for a number of years and many of my patients were field workers and their extended families. I am married and am lucky to have a daughter who combines the best of myself and my husband. She is now attending Harvard University and aspires to become a physician herself someday. Many of my patients like to tell me about their children and sometimes ask about mine. I hear fairly often, "Hey Doc, what is your daughter up to these days?"
About my practice
I believe in working closely with patients as a team to take advantage of the amazing benefits of preventive medicine and build healthy habits for a more fulfilling life. I am accessible to all my patients, and am available through emails, telephone calls, and soon video appointments. When you call, it may go to a call center, but I assure you that your message will reach me or a physician on call as quickly as possible. My primary communication goal is to make sure you are heard, and that your needs are understood and taken care of. My overall priority is your health and wellbeing, both physically and mentally.
How I thrive
Everyone needs an escape from work to stay healthy and sane! I love dancing, especially competitive ballroom dancing. After a busy day, I look forward to going to the dance studio so I can release my stress through dance. I also enjoy Zumba, working out at the gym, hiking, and family vacations. I deeply believe in helping others and giving back to the community. I am a proud board member of an organization called the Peruvian-American Medical Society of Southern California. As Peruvian-American medical providers, we organize medical missions to needy villages in Peru. With the generous support of many donors including Kaiser Permanente, I recently led our first medical mission to one of the most underserved areas in Peru—a remote village high in the Andes—and hope to continue doing this kind of work for years to come.
