About me

I joined the Kaiser Permanente family after 6 years on faculty at the USC Roski Eye Institute in Los Angeles, where I was an associate professor of clinical ophthalmology in the Glaucoma Division and the director of the Glaucoma Fellowship. I really believe in Kaiser Permanente’s health care model, from its emphasis on prevention and healthy living to its delivery of medicine based on evidence and current research. I’m proud to be part of the Kaiser Permanente family and look forward to working with you to provide high-quality care for your eyes.

Biography

I’m half-Filipina and half-German. I went to Washington University in St. Louis, majoring in biochemistry and international studies, and I earned my MD and master’s in public health at Columbia University in New York. I then moved to Los Angeles for my ophthalmology residency at USC. I served as assistant chief of service or “chief resident” for a year after residency, then went to UCLA Jules Stein Eye Institute for glaucoma fellowship. After that, I enjoyed 6 busy years in the Glaucoma Division at the USC Roski Eye Institute, where in addition to a busy practice, I wrote or co-authored over 40 journal articles or academic publications. I still enjoy being an active member of the American Glaucoma Society and American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), as well as serving as peer reviewer for multiple ophthalmology journals. I am also a member of the AAO Ophthalmic Technology Assessment Committee for Glaucoma. I am passionate about volunteering abroad and performing manual small-incision cataract surgery and other surgeries in places with limited access to care, and I have traveled to Fiji, Jamaica, and Mexico on such medical missions.

About my practice

As an ophthalmologist and glaucoma specialist, I manage both comprehensive conditions such as cataracts as well as glaucoma. I perform cataract surgery, laser glaucoma procedures, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, trabeculectomies, and aqueous shunt surgeries. Some of the minimally invasive glaucoma procedures can be combined very nicely with cataract surgery. I enjoy staying abreast of and helping to define the latest developments in ophthalmology and glaucoma management and sharing that knowledge with members. I believe in delivering high-quality clinical and surgical care to our members. I strive to listen carefully to the needs and concerns of members and to work as a team to determine the best personalized eye management solution for them. I enjoy the long-lasting relationships that treating a chronic condition such as glaucoma provides. I am grateful to work with a fantastic and highly skilled group of ophthalmology colleagues and staff that make it possible to deliver high-quality care to our members.

How I thrive

I enjoy staying active with my husband, 2 kids, and our dog, Pluto. We love spending time outdoors, including hiking, surfing, and spending time at the beach. We love exploring new plant-based cuisine around L.A.
