About me
Hello, and welcome to my Web page! My name is Dr. Edgar Lopez, and I am an internal medicine physician for Kaiser Permanente in Kern County. It is an honor to have this opportunity to explain a little more about my practice and how we can work together to reach your health and wellness goals.
Biography
I was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley. By the end of my high school education, I knew medicine was the future I wanted to pursue. My parents were very supportive of my decision and encouraged me to take the next step. Even as a child, I was always interested in science and math, so being able to bridge my love for helping people with the sciences made medicine a natural fit. I enrolled at UCLA for my biology undergraduate work. I worked for several years as a math and science instructor and tutor in the Santa Clarita area, teaching biology, chemistry, and calculus. I relocated to Guadalajara, Mexico, when I was accepted into the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara for medical school. A big push in my decision to attend the school was that my father was originally from the area, and I had many family members living there, including my grandparents. I am glad I made that decision — it was a wonderful experience getting to connect and build relationships with my extended family. Additionally, one of my goals was and continues to be to help the Spanish-speaking community. Through my training in Mexico, I was better able to learn Spanish medicine, the language, and the culture. It also helped me expand my knowledge as a practitioner because of the limitations on diagnostic resources, like testing and laboratory access. After medical school, I was accepted into the internal medicine residency at the Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago. I initially pursued training in oncology but quickly realized that primary care was the specialty that I found the most fulfilling. As a physician, I appreciate being able to build long-term relationships and provide care for the total person. After my residency, I knew I wanted to return to an area close to my family, so I jumped at the opportunity when I was offered a position with the Kaiser Permanente team in Kern County.
About my practice
I chose to become a primary care physician because I enjoy getting to know members. Building a relationship with members that is centered on open communication creates trust, which is key to working toward their healthcare goals. I am also a big advocate for education, and I will take the time to ensure that members understand their treatment plan. If both members and I are on the same page for what we are trying to achieve, there is a much better probability of success. Most importantly, I firmly believe that preventive medicine is the best medicine. Making those necessary lifestyle changes to help set up lifelong change is always the goal.
How I thrive
Being with my family is the most important factor in how I thrive. Whether here in California or visiting my extended family in Guadalajara, I take every opportunity to reconnect and strengthen my family ties. I also enjoy music and play the guitar.
