About me
Hello, and thank you for visiting my Web page. My name is Dr. Colin Watanabe and I joined Kaiser Permanente in 2005 after finishing my cardiology fellowship training at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Although I am a Northern California native, I have decided to remain in Los Angeles because I absolutely love my job. I hope this passion shows through in the way that I interact with you.
Biography
I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, and my parents are still there. I am of Japanese ancestry, but since my family has been in California for four generations (Sansei or Yonsei), I also consider myself to be a California native. I am very close to my parents and siblings, visiting them quite often, though I have decided to live in Los Angeles for many reasons, including the fantastic job that I have here. Another reason is the wonderful neighborhood (South Pasadena) where my wife and I are raising our son. We love Southern California for many other reasons, including the great weather, the diversity of people and excellent food, the cultural amenities, and the proximity to fantastic outdoor activity areas. My hobbies include mountain biking, skiing, snowboarding, cooking, reading, going to sports and cultural events, and spending time with family and friends.
About my practice
I absolutely love my job as a cardiologist here at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center. The best part of being a cardiologist is being able to interact with and establish lasting relationships with members. I decided to pursue a career in medicine primarily for this reason, and it remains the most rewarding part of my job. Additionally, I have a great deal of respect for my colleagues, as they are excellent doctors and close friends. Our department is also unique in that it is an academic program, which allows us to teach cardiology fellows and residents, and to stay abreast of the latest innovations in our field. The Los Angeles Medical Center is also a referral center for most Kaiser Permanente hospitals, and this allows us to follow many members with a variety of interesting cardiac conditions. My specialty is general cardiology with a particular focus on echocardiography ( sonogram of the heart), and I am director of the Echocardiography Laboratory.
How I thrive
One of my philosophies about leading a healthy and happy life is to be balanced, both at work and outside of the hospital. Although I love my job and pursue it with a passion, I am also equally passionate about the family, social, and spiritual aspects of my life. I am a firm believer that being balanced in this way makes one a better physician.
