About me
Welcome! Thank you for taking the time to learn more about my background.
Biography
Originally from the Midwest, I have enjoyed living in various parts of the United States before settling down in Southern California. My humble and altruistic parents, originally from Taiwan, never pressured me to become a doctor, but I am glad that I pursued my interests and love being a sleep medicine physician. I moved to the East Coast for my undergraduate studies in biology at Harvard University and medical school at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where I am deeply grateful for the dedicated teaching I received there. For my postgraduate studies, I moved to the West Coast. I completed my internal medicine residency with a medical education track at UC Davis. At UC Davis, I was selected by medical students as the one physician across all subspecialties in all the residency programs to be inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society for "outstanding humanism" and "exemplary service, integrity, clinical excellence, and compassion." For my sleep medicine fellowship, I trained at Stanford University, where I was one of the last classes to have been educated by the late Dr. Christian Guilleminault, who invented the term "obstructive sleep apnea syndrome" and the apnea-hypopnea index, among other discoveries as one of the founding figures of sleep medicine.
About my practice
After sleep medicine fellowship, I dedicated my clinical practice to sleep medicine and absolutely love it. Sleep is indispensable for life. Getting sufficient quantity and quality of sleep is fundamental to health and daytime function. As a sleep medicine physician, I care for patients with sleep-related conditions, including but not limited to different kinds of sleep apnea, hypersomnia, circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders, and restless legs syndrome. My goal is to treat each member like I would my family member. Education is very important to me; I truly enjoy learning from and teaching others. Throughout my life, I have been blessed to receive various clinical, leadership, professionalism, research, and teaching awards.
How I thrive
As trite as it sounds coming from a sleep doctor, I do indeed try to thrive by optimizing my sleep. Although sometimes easier said than done, I personally and professionally believe that sleep should not be considered optional or a luxury, but rather made a top priority. My interests outside of work include family and friends, faith, sports (especially badminton and softball), music, cooking, baking, and traveling, as well as learning about new places, people, and cultures.
