Your developing baby – week 8

by Kaiser Permanente |
Fetus at week 8, illustration

At 8 weeks, your baby is about the size of a kidney bean. Your baby's:

  • Arms, legs, muscles, and skin are developing
  • Eyes, ears, and face are also forming. The outer ears are taking shape, and the eyes are developing color (pigment).
  • Male or female genitals are starting to form, though we cannot yet tell your baby’s sex
  • Brain, stomach, liver, and other organs are also growing

Because the brain is developing faster than other organs, the head is large compared to the rest of the body.

The neural tube that will become the baby’s spine continues to develop and remains longer than the body, making it look like a tail.
