About Me
I grew up in a small town in Wisconsin. My mom was a nurse working as a first assistant in surgery at our regional hospital. My interest in medicine began with early experiences entering the hospital with my mom when she was on call for emergency surgeries. This grew into observation opportunities and I was struck by the deep relationships that formed between the health care team and the patients as well as the opportunity to help people through difficult situations. Still to this day, the best part of being a physician is forming these relationships with my patients. I was honored to be recognized as a 5280 Magazine Top Doctor in 2019.
About my practice
The integrated care delivered through Kaiser Permanente is unique and provides a tremendous advantage for our patients and providers. However, there is no substitute for hearing from my patients about their symptoms, experiences, fears and barriers to care. I see myself as my patients’ advocate and partner in health care. Simply put, we form a team. I invite honest communication and questions either through kp.org or via phone call and try to be as available as possible. I will always listen and discuss options, risks and benefits so we can come up with recommendations and treatments that make everyone comfortable. One of the things that attracted me to head and neck surgery is the opportunity to see patients of all ages. I view myself as having a general ENT practice but do have special interest in head and neck cancer as well as thyroid and parathyroid surgery. I enjoy everything from ear tube surgery for infants to sinus and nasal surgery to complex head and neck cancer surgery.
How I thrive
My focus outside my career is my family. I am blessed with a wonderful wife as well as 2 terrific children. My kids have followed my wife’s passion into alpine ski racing and currently compete in slalom, giant slalom and super G races. My parenting philosophy has always been to expose my kids to as much as possible and help them find something to be passionate about, and then support it 100 percent. As such, I have learned how to be a ski technician, and am a USSA certified timing and calculation official and a certified referee for races. I also love to travel.
