About Me

Welcome to my Web page. I'm happy to have this chance to introduce myself and tell you about my practice. I am currently physician-in-charge at our Kaiser Permanente East Los Angeles Medical Offices.

Biography

I was born and raised in East Los Angeles, the son of Mexican immigrants. I went to college on a track scholarship and became interested in medicine while in school. I was cofounder of the Brown Beret free clinic in 1968 and founder of the Clinica Tepati Latino free clinic at UC Davis Medical School in 1997. Since the late 1960s, I have been personally involved with ensuring that Latino/Chicano students have access to medical schools. I am board certified in family practice and sports medicine and serve on Kaiser Permanente’s National Diversity Council. I am also chairman of the AltaMed Board of Directors, a community-based medical group serving low-income patients in Southern California.

About my practice

I am a Spanish-speaking family practice physician serving a large Latino population in East Los Angeles. I am passionate about resolving health care disparities in the Latino and minority communities of California.

How I thrive

I am an avid trail runner and also enjoy long-distance cycling. I have been a cross-country and track coach at Loyola High School in Los Angeles since 1991. I have coached five state championships, and my teams have been ranked sixth and eighth in the nation.
