About Me

Welcome! I am very happy and excited that you have found my Web page here at Kaiser Permanente. Please allow me to introduce myself to you and tell you about my surgical practice. I had started at Kaiser Permanente Fontana in 2010, but I moved over to the newly opened Ontario campus in November 2011 and have been here ever since.

Biography

I was born and raised in Hong Kong. I speak English, Cantonese, and Mandarin fluently. I came to this wonderful country in 1977. I started my college education at Kent State University in Ohio and began my medical training at Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1981. After graduation, I began surgery training at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. I also had additional training in trauma and surgical critical care. I then spent the next ten years in Detroit, working as a trauma and general surgeon at Henry Ford Hospital and Wayne State University. I have an interest in laparoscopic surgery and was one of the first to perform this type of surgery at Henry Ford Hospital. After 15 years in the cold Midwest, I moved to California to rejoin the rest of my family. I have spent more than 12 years in Bakersfield as the program director of surgical residency, training many young surgeons to serve in Southern California. Some of them are working here at Kaiser and may even be your doctors.

About my practice

I have deep interests in general, advanced laparoscopic, and GI surgeries. I was fortunate to be trained by a master of hernia surgery, Dr. Joseph Ponka. I have a special interest in all types of hernia surgery. At Kaiser Permanente, I have an excellent team and resources that allow me to provide high-quality surgical care. I believe in education and enjoy getting you involved in your care as you heal and recover from surgery. My team of nurses and other support staff will also be available to you.

How I thrive

I love to teach young surgeons. You may run into me giving impromptu lectures in the hallway. I love to travel, visit different cultures, and learn new languages. I have spent a year in Africa as a missionary surgeon and have climbed to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. I started cycling recently and I hope to participate in a bicycle race in the future. I love nature and hiking in the woods.
