About Me

I was born, raised and went to medical school in Mexico City. I trained at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York and at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Canada, where I did a fellowship in infectious diseases. I have been a physician with the Colorado Permanente Medical Group since 1977 practicing infectious diseases. I love this specialty since it allows me to treat a wide variety of conditions and I’m not limited to a single organ or body system. I enjoy the ability to make a diagnosis and treat it with an antimicrobial that will completely cure the infection, as well as helping other physicians to make a diagnosis and treat the patient most appropriately.

About my practice

I have a passion and dedication for the care of my patients. I like to listen to patients and explain to them what I think and what I plan to do. I encourage them to ask questions and take ownership of their treatment. I try very hard to provide the best, least expensive and easiest care for them. I communicate with patients, other physicians and providers regarding their patients to coordinate their care seamlessly. I see adult patients with any infectious disease problem in the office or in the hospital any time another provider requests a consult. As part of my practice, I have been taking care of HIV+ patients since this infection was first described. It has been most rewarding to participate in research projects and see all the advances achieved. I have decreased my practice to 3 days a week, but I continue to look forward to serving patients as I have been doing most of my life.

How I thrive

When I’m not working, I like to read fiction, swim and travel. I have 8 grandchildren – 5 of them live on the East Coast so my travel is often in that direction. I like to attend medical meetings in my specialty and enjoy touring the places where the meetings take place.
