About Me

Welcome, and thank you for visiting my Web page. I am Dr. Michael Chang, a board-certified thoracic surgeon at Kaiser Permanente’s Los Angeles Medical Center. My clinical focus is primarily lung oncology, and I am deeply committed to providing comprehensive, member-centered care in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.

Biography

I earned my medical degree at University of Michigan and a master of public health degree at Harvard University. My general surgery residency was at the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to joining Kaiser Permanente in 2006, I completed my cardiothoracic fellowship and was a staff thoracic surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston with a faculty appointment at Harvard Medical School.

About my practice

My Cancer Subspecialty

My practice is centered on the surgical management of thoracic malignancies, with a primary focus on lung cancer. Most surgeries that I perform are minimally invasive procedures on the robotic platform, including robotic-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy, robotic mediastinal mass resection, and robotic esophagectomy. I have experience with the surgical treatment of mesothelioma. I also treat benign conditions of the esophagus, pleura, and mediastinum.

National Expertise and Multidisciplinary Leadership

I work closely with pulmonologists, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists as part of an integrated multidisciplinary team, ensuring members receive optimal, personalized treatment. I am a regional expert in thoracic surgery and lung oncology and contribute regularly to our Southern California Lung Tumor Board.

I serve on the Southern California Regional Subspecialty Lung Oncology Committee, where I collaborate on data-driven analysis of emerging cancer therapeutics. Our work informs the National Kaiser Permanente Oncology Care Pathways, helping shape treatment protocols used across the country.

Research and Clinical Trials

Throughout my career, I have been engaged in thoracic oncology research and clinical data analysis. I remain committed to care based on evidence and current research and to innovation within the field.

How I thrive

Outside of work, I thrive by staying active. I enjoy going to the gym, playing golf (and working to fix my slice), skiing, and reading the newspaper
