About Me

My name is Dr. Yeukkei Cheung, and I am a fellowship-trained, board-certified orthopedic surgeon. I specialize in total joint reconstruction and have been a member of the Kaiser Permanente San Diego Orthopedic Department since 2011.

Biography

Originally from Hong Kong, I moved to southern Connecticut with my family when I was just a teenager. I attended medical school at Boston University, a surgical residency at Westchester County Medical Center in New York, and a fellowship in orthopedic surgery at UC Davis Medical Center. After my fellowship concluded, I spent some time working at a private practice in the Bay Area before joining Kaiser Permanente.

Since joining Kaiser Permanente, I have participated in efforts to ensure we are providing high-quality care. One such effort was my participation on the Utilization of Blood Products Committee, supporting the development of procedures based on evidence and current research for blood transfusions during surgery. I also stay up to date on advancements in the field through my involvement as a fellow for both the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery and the Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.

About my practice

As we age, many of us develop arthritis in our knees and hips. Often the condition grows so severe that it requires joint replacement surgery. These surgeries are the focus of my practice, and I feel empowered that I can ease members' pain and help them get back to their work, leisure, and other activities. I value connecting with members on a human level to understand their needs so we can work together to determine the right care plan for them.

These life-transforming treatments are not possible without the work and coordination by an incredible team of medical assistants, nurses, orthopedic techs, and other support staff. At Kaiser Permanente, we are fortunate to also have staff that guide members from the start to the end of their joint replacement journey, addressing chronic health issues and providing resources that support optimal post-surgery outcomes. We all work together toward one goal - to help members feel comfortable and educated, and get them moving smoothly again.

How I thrive

Alongside my professional duties, I take my own health very seriously. I aim for at least 3 sessions of rigorous exercise every week, whether that includes jogging, walking, swimming, or hiking. I also like to unwind by playing with my dog, exploring farmers markets, and trying out different restaurants around San Diego.
