About Me

My name is Dr. Joseph Carney, and I am a fellowship-trained, board-certified orthopedic sports medicine surgeon with over 15 years of experience. I have worked full time with Kaiser Permanente's San Diego Orthopedics Department since 2018.

Biography

Originally from Ohio, I completed medical school at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, and moved to San Diego while on active duty in the US Navy to serve as an orthopedic surgeon at Naval Medical Center San Diego. There, I cared for our active-duty military and retired service members and their families, and I helped to run the orthopedic residency program as the program director. I also served for a period of time as the team orthopedic surgeon to our San Diego-based Naval Special Warfare (SEAL) Teams.

I transitioned from the Navy to Kaiser Permanente in 2018. I have an interest in academics and furthering the field of orthopedic surgery and am a current faculty in the Kaiser Permanente San Diego Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellowship. I am a member of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and the California Orthopedic Association. I also have experience on the department's leadership team and sports medicine steering committee.

About my practice

I am comfortable caring for injured athletes and individuals of all ages and abilities. I specialize in treating sports injuries to the shoulder, knee, and hip. Given the dramatic increase in youth overuse injuries in recent years, I also have a strong interest in youth sports injury prevention. In addition to sports injuries, I also care for traumatic fractures.

I believe in comprehensive, attentive, and efficient care. While treatment needs to be guided by strong scientific evidence and established results, I strive to never forget that the person comes first. I am committed to member satisfaction and continually seek to better meet the needs of those I care for. I am very fortunate to work with a strong team of qualified physicians and surgeons who always put members at the center of what we do.

How I thrive

A great balance of family, work, and healthy activity is important to me. I love spending time with my 3 sons and our dog, and exploring beautiful San Diego.
