About Me
My parents moved to Oregon before I started primary school, and I grew up in the Portland metropolitan area. I attended the University of Oregon as an undergraduate and then for graduate school. I am a graduate of the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) medical school and completed my first residency in psychiatry, also at OHSU. I also completed a second residency in aerospace medicine and a master's of public health at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. I am a former United States Army-trained flight surgeon, and I worked for and continue to provide consultation to NASA at the Johnson Space Center. I also enjoyed providing psychiatric care to Native Americans at the Grand Ronde tribal medical center. I have always enjoyed practicing medicine in unique and challenging environments. My pronouns are he/him/his.
About my practice
Having studied biology, psychiatry, public health, and neurosciences, I bring diverse training to my work. I see clinical medicine as a way to apply medical discoveries to humanity. I strongly support Kaiser Permanente's team approach to health care and believe this is the best way to provide optimal care to my patients. I enjoy working closely with my primary care colleagues to help patients recover from mental health conditions. I believe the best way to treat psychiatric illness is to formulate a treatment plan that takes into consideration each person’s unique qualities and goals. I work closely with our therapists and believe that the best treatment is a blended approach that includes medication when indicated, psychotherapy, and wellness activities.
- Culturally specific care: specialty in care for Native American/American Indian; first responders, military, aviation professionals
- Population specialties: adults
- Language capacity: English
- Areas of focus: In addition to general adult psychiatry (mood disorders, anxiety disorders), I also care for patients having psychiatric issues related to aviation and the military.
How I thrive
I thrive by having an active, balanced life. I am an outdoor enthusiast and sportsman, and my family and I enjoy outdoor recreational activities year-round. For exercise and fitness, I am a competitive long-distance runner and triathlete. For adrenaline I enjoy pedaling road bikes fast, riding motorcycles, and flying small aircraft. Downtime is also very important in my personal life — including family meals, movie nights, and weekend trips away from town. Faith is an important component in my spiritual health.
