About Me
My name is Dr. Robert Powell, and I am a board-certified orthopedic surgeon. I specialize in total hip and knee replacement and revision. I have been a member of the Kaiser Permanente San Diego Orthopedic Surgery Department since 2003.
Biography
Originally from a small town in northern Michigan, I started my journey in medicine at Eastern Virginia School of Medicine. There, I was selected to join a medical honor society for excellence in academics and am still a member today. I then completed my residency at Rutgers University and my fellowship in lower extremity reconstruction at Scripps Clinic in La Jolla.
Since joining Kaiser Permanente, I have had the opportunity to be a member of the leadership team, the orthopedics representative for the Infection Control Committee, and the total joint replacement lead physician for a total of 12 years. I am also a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and a member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.
Growing up, I was always the person my peers turned to fix things. My attention to detail, fascination with mechanics, and passion for helping others made orthopedic surgery the perfect career path for me.
About my practice
My clinical practice focuses on hip and knee replacements. These types of surgeries bring me a high level of professional fulfillment because of how much they help members return to doing the things they love. I take members' health very seriously and always make it a priority to ensure they understand the facts of their case and the treatment options, and have realistic expectations going into their treatment. Everyone on our team has worked together to develop treatment based on evidence and current research. I am fortunate to work with such a strong and well-coordinated team of physicians, advanced practice providers, medical assistants, therapists, and other healthcare professionals that put the member at the center of everything they do.
How I thrive
I thrive by living an active lifestyle and enjoying the outdoors. I enjoy cycling, golfing, and skiing with my wife. With a college wrestling background, I also have a passion for advocacy of non-revenue-generating sports, and previously held a board member role for a nonprofit promoting funding for these types of sports. While wrestling might not be your passion, I look forward to getting you moving too!
