About Me
I joined Kaiser Permanente in 1990 and have practiced primary care internal medicine since that time. I grew up primarily in Southern California, then attended the University of Oregon as an undergraduate, followed by medical school at the University of Minnesota. I did my residency training at Oregon Health Sciences University. Prior to working at Kaiser Permanente I had a private practice here in Portland with two other physicians for seven years, but I was attracted to Kaiser Permanente because of the ability to practice the kind of medicine I believed in, without the hassles of managing a business myself. I have had a wonderful variety of experiences working with Kaiser Permanente including working with medical residents and students from Oregon Health Sciences University, serving as a committee lead for several years overseeing Cardiovascular disease prevention strategies, and serving as the medical director for the Kaiser Permanente Westside clinics since 2007. My wife and I married in 1979, right before I started my internship and we have two adult daughters, one here in Portland and one living with her husband in San Francisco.
About my practice
Currently my practice involves providing primary care for a group of patients with congestive heart failure as part of Kaiser Permanente's Congestive Heart Failure Complex Care Medical Home project. I strongly believe in a team-based approach to care including close interactions with specialty physicians, all geared toward taking care of patients according to what they value, and this project has been a great opportunity to develop a new program that embodies those qualities. My work currently is based in the Cardiology department, though I cover the broad range of health care for adults with practice.
How I thrive
My time with family and friends is very important. So is exercise and keeping fit. I run regularly and in my free time am learning to play the French horn. I love to travel and my wife and I had the privilege of spending last year living in New Zealand while I practiced medicine in a local hospital there and worked with medical students and medical residents. I enjoy teaching and find it tends to invigorate me by always keeping me on my toes.
