Leading national cancer research
Kaiser Permanente has one of the largest enrollments in the nation for National Cancer Institute (NCI) clinical trials. We are one of only 46 NCI-approved community enrollment sites. We focus on bringing clinical trials close to home for our patients.
The National Cancer Institute has selected Kaiser Permanente to be part of its Cancer Screening Research Network. The effort supports the nation’s Cancer Moonshot initiative, a White House-led initiative to reduce cancer deaths in the U.S. by half by 2047.
Our researchers examine every angle of the disease, from screening and prevention to cancer’s genetic and genomic foundations. Our work explores the comparative effectiveness of cancer treatments, quality-of-life issues associated with the disease, and the economic burden of cancer at the individual, family, community, and health system level.
Our research teams collaborate with our doctors and health care professionals and use their findings to improve cancer care. They also quickly share new or updated protocols with our cancer specialists. That way, you benefit from the most advanced treatment as soon as possible.
Some clinical trial options include:
- Targeted cancer therapies for your individual cancer
- New approaches to surgery or radiation
- Combinations of therapies and new chemotherapies
- New treatment methods, such as immunotherapy or gene therapy
Kaiser Permanente Northwest received a national award for exceptional achievement in patient enrollments in National Cancer Institute (NCI) trials — and is a local leader in national clinical trial recruitment.
Dr. Sandeep Mashru, our local research lead, has received an award from the National Cancer Institute for clinical trial recruiting. In recruiting it is important to have both a large number as well as a diversity of participants so that the research reflects the diversity of our overall population.
We are currently recruiting for the Connect for Cancer Prevention Study from the National Cancer Institute, which is part of the National Institutes of Health. Connect is a study to better understand the causes of cancer and how to prevent it.
