Unknown Diagnosis in Children: Care Instructions

Skip Navigation

Overview

One or more doctors have given your child a physical exam, reviewed your child's symptoms, and asked about any past medical problems. Your child may have had tests.

At this time, the doctors feel it is safe for you to take your child home.

It is very important that you follow up with your doctor as directed. If your child continues to have symptoms, they may need more tests or treatment.

The doctor has checked your child carefully, but problems can develop later. If you notice any problems or new symptoms, get medical treatment right away.

Follow-up care is a key part of your child's treatment and safety. Be sure to make and go to all appointments, and contact your doctor if your child is having problems. It's also a good idea to know your child's test results and keep a list of the medicines your child takes.

How can you care for your child at home?

  • Keep track of any new symptoms or changes in your child's symptoms.
  • Have your child rest until they feel better.
  • Be safe with medicines. Have your child take medicines exactly as prescribed. Contact your doctor if you think your child is having a problem with their medicine.

When should you call for help?

Call 911 anytime you think your child may need emergency care. For example, call if:

  • Your child passes out (loses consciousness).
  • Your child seems very sick or is hard to wake up.

Contact your doctor now or seek immediate medical care if:

  • Your child has new symptoms like a fever, difficulty breathing, vomiting, or a rash.
  • Your child has new or different pain.
  • Your child seems to be getting much sicker.
  • Your child's symptoms are getting worse.

Watch closely for changes in your child's health, and be sure to contact your doctor if:

  • Your child does not get better as expected.
