Healthy joint compared to damaged joint

In some types of inflammatory arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis, the body's immune system attacks the joint lining (synovium). This causes inflammation. Over time this inflammation can damage the cartilage and bone. It can also loosen ligaments and tendon attachments.
