Localized and advanced prostate cancer

Skip Navigation

Prostate cancer is often described based on whether it is confined to the prostate or it has spread outside the prostate.

  • Localized prostate cancer is prostate cancer that has not spread outside the prostate.
  • Advanced prostate cancer is prostate cancer that has spread outside the prostate. It includes:
    • Regional or locally advanced prostate cancer. This is cancer that has spread beyond the prostate but only to the nearby tissues.
    • Metastatic prostate cancer. This is cancer that has spread beyond the prostate to other places in the body, such as the bones, liver, or lungs.
