Learning About How to Wear a Mask

Skip Navigation

Wearing a mask can help prevent the spread of infection. Many germs spread through droplets when you breathe, talk, cough, or sneeze. Masks protect you and others from inhaling droplets. A mask should cover your nose and mouth. Choose one with the best fit, protection, and comfort for you.

Wash your hands. Scrub with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if you can't wash your hands.

Put the mask on, and make sure it fits. It should cover your nose and mouth with no gaps at the sides. If you wear glasses, place them over the top of the mask to prevent fogging.

Take the mask off. Touch only the loops or ties.

If it's a cloth mask, wash it. If it's a disposable mask, throw it away. Then wash your hands with soap and water.
