Learning About How to Get Financial and Other Support During Pregnancy

Skip Navigation

When you're pregnant, being unsure of how you'll pay for health care and other needs can be stressful. For some people, it may be hard to focus on anything else. But there are places, programs, and services that can help. Here are some tips and some online resources.

Get help with affordable care.

Your state may offer programs that help people get health insurance and prenatal care. Medicaid covers pregnancy and childbirth. Keep in mind that some states have different names for their Medicaid program and their Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Planned Parenthood or a community health center can also be an affordable place to get care or information.

Get help with food.

One of the ways to care for yourself and your baby is healthy eating. There are places and programs that can help you add to your food budget. You may be able to get help though government programs, especially if you already get SNAP benefits. You can also try looking for food programs through places of worship, food banks, and other sources in your area.

Explore health centers.

Federally funded health centers provide medical care for people who don't have health insurance. Health centers may offer services such as checkups, pregnancy care, immunizations for children, and other medical treatment. The amount you pay for care depends on your income.

Learn about programs for after you give birth.

Having a baby may qualify you for more health care coverage. For example, the Children's Health Insurance Program provides low-cost insurance for children whose families don't qualify for Medicaid coverage but cannot afford private insurance.

Talk to people whose experience is like yours.

Someone you trust may have tips they could share. Or they may be able to help you find the services you need.

Take time and take breaks.

It may take time and patience while you're online, on the phone, or in person to find the services or programs you need. If it becomes too much, take a break. You know yourself, your growing baby, and your body.
