Learning About Getting In and Out of a Bathtub Safely

Skip Navigation

Introduction

Many falls happen during bathing. All that water makes the bathroom a slippery place.

  • You may no longer be able to step over the tub wall comfortably and safely.
  • You might lean on things that aren't meant to support your weight, like a towel bar or the shower curtain.

There are several types of aids that will help keep you safe. You can buy them at hardware or home improvement stores or online.

What tools can help you in a bathtub?

There are many types of bars and rails that can be installed on the walls next to your tub or on the edge of the tub. They can help keep you safe while you're getting in or out of the tub. It's important to have them permanently installed, rather than attached with suction.

Transfer bench

There are several kinds of benches or seats to use in the bathtub. One type sits in the tub and extends out over the side. You sit on the bench. Then you lift one leg at a time into the tub, sliding your body over as you do so. Another common tub bench sits inside the tub. To use this type, you need to be able to safely step into the tub before you sit down.

Nonskid mats

Water makes both the floor of the tub and the bathroom floor slippery. You can buy adhesive strips that stick to the floor of the tub. Or you can use a nonskid tub mat. Outside the tub, make sure you use a rug with a nonskid bottom. Don't use a plain towel.

Hand-held shower head

With a hand-held shower head, you can get clean without having to lower yourself into the tub. If your tub doesn't have a shower curtain, hanging one can keep water from spilling out onto the floor.

Follow-up care is a key part of your treatment and safety. Be sure to make and go to all appointments, and call your doctor if you are having problems. It's also a good idea to know your test results and keep a list of the medicines you take.
