Learning About ARBs

Skip Navigation

Introduction

Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) block a hormone that makes blood vessels narrow. As a result, the blood vessels relax and widen. This lowers blood pressure. These medicines also put more water and salt (sodium) into the urine. This lowers blood pressure too.

ARBs can treat:

  • High blood pressure.
  • Coronary artery disease.
  • Heart failure.

These medicines are a good choice for people with diabetes. They don't affect blood sugar levels, and they may protect the kidneys.

Examples

For each medicine in the list, the generic name is first. This is followed by a brand name.

  • Candesartan (Atacand)
  • Irbesartan (Avapro)
  • Losartan (Cozaar)
  • Olmesartan (Benicar)
  • Valsartan (Diovan)

This is not a complete list of all ARB medicines.

Possible side effects

All medicines can cause side effects.

Side effects of ARBs may include:

  • Low blood pressure. You may feel dizzy and weak.
  • High potassium levels.

You may have other side effects not listed here. Check the information that comes with your medicine or ask your doctor or pharmacist about the side effects of these medicines.

What to know about taking this medicine

  • Be safe with medicines. Take your medicines exactly as prescribed. Contact your doctor if you think you are having a problem with your medicine or if you missed a dose of a medicine.
  • ARBs may be used if you had a chronic, dry, hacking cough when you tried to take an ACE inhibitor. ARBs are less likely to cause a cough.
