Uses

This solution is used to supply water and salt (sodium chloride) to the body. Sodium chloride solution may also be mixed with other medications given by injection into a vein.

How to use

This solution is usually given by injection into a vein as directed by your doctor. It may be given in the hospital, in a clinic, or at home.

If you are using this product at home, learn all preparation and usage instructions from your health care professional. Before using, check this product for particles or discoloration. If either is present, do not use the liquid. If you are mixing this solution with another medication, ask your doctor or pharmacist if it is proper to mix it with the medication. Learn how to store and discard medical supplies safely.

The dosage is based on your age, weight, medical condition, and response to treatment.

Side effects

Redness, pain, or swelling at the injection site may occur. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Remember that this medication has been prescribed because your doctor has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including:

  • swelling hands/ankles/feet
  • muscle cramps
  • unusual weakness
  • headache
  • nausea
  • extreme drowsiness
  • mental/mood changes (such as confusion)
  • seizures

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including:

  • rash
  • itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat)
  • severe dizziness
  • trouble breathing

Precautions

Before using this product, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Before using this product, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of:

  • kidney problems
  • heart problems (such as heart failure)
  • body water/salt imbalance

Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).

This solution is safe to use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding when used as directed.

Missed dose

It is important to get each dose of this medication as scheduled. If you miss a dose or if your dose is interrupted or stopped, ask your doctor right away for a new dosing schedule.

Storage

Store at room temperature away from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medications away from children and pets.

Do not flush medications down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. Properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company.
