This product is used to relieve occasional constipation. Glycerin belongs to a class of drugs known as hyperosmotic laxatives. It works by drawing water into the intestines. This effect usually results in a bowel movement within 15 to 60 minutes.

Adults normally have bowel movements anywhere from once daily to 1 to 2 times weekly. Preschool-aged children normally have bowel movements anywhere from once daily to once every other day.

Check the ingredients on the label even if you have used the product before. The manufacturer may have changed the ingredients. Also, products with similar names may contain different ingredients meant for different purposes. Using the wrong product could harm you.

This product is for rectal use only. If you are using the over-the-counter product to self-treat, read and follow all directions on the product package before using this medication. If you have any questions, consult your pharmacist. If your doctor has prescribed this medication, use it as directed.

Wash your hands before and after using this product. Remove the protective shield before using. Lie on your left side with your knee bent. Or, if you find it more comfortable, you may kneel, then lower your head and chest forward until the left side of your face is resting on the surface with your left arm folded comfortably. With steady pressure, gently insert the tip into your rectum with a slight side-to-side movement, pointing the tip toward your navel. Do not force the tip into your rectum because doing so can cause injury. Squeeze the tube until nearly all of the liquid is inside your rectum. A small amount of liquid may remain in the tube after use. Remove the product from your rectum and discard properly.

Use this medication only when needed. Do not use this product for more than 1 week unless directed by your doctor.

The dosage is based on your age, medical condition, and response to treatment. Do not use more than 1 dose in a day. Do not increase your dose or use this drug more often or for longer than directed. Your condition will not improve any faster, and your risk of side effects will increase.

If this product is used too often, it may cause loss of normal bowel function and an inability to have a bowel movement without using the product (laxative dependence). If you notice symptoms of overuse, such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, decreased weight, or weakness, contact your doctor promptly.

Tell your doctor if you do not have a bowel movement after using this product or if your condition lasts or gets worse. If you think you may have a serious medical problem, get medical help right away.

Rectal irritation/burning, abdominal discomfort/cramps, or small amounts of mucus in the stool may occur. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

If your doctor has directed you to use this product, remember that your doctor has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this product do not have serious side effects.

Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including:

• abdominal pain that is severe or doesn't go away
• bloody stools
• rectal bleeding

Diarrhea that doesn't stop may result in dehydration. Contact your doctor promptly if you notice any symptoms of dehydration, such as unusual decreased urination, unusual dry mouth/thirst, fast heartbeat, or dizziness/lightheadedness.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including:

• rash
• itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat)
• severe dizziness
• trouble breathing

If you have any of the following health problems, consult your doctor or pharmacist before using this product:

• rectal bleeding
• intestinal blockage (obstruction)
• other bowel problems (such as ulcerative colitis, hemorrhoids)
• current stomach/abdominal symptoms (such as nausea/vomiting that doesn't stop, pain, cramping)
• sudden change in bowel habits over the previous 2 weeks

Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).

During pregnancy, this product should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

It is unknown if this product passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
