Medication name

Generic name:
Bimatoprost implant - intraocular

Pronunciation
(bye-MAT-oh-prost)

Brand name(s)
Durysta

Uses

Bimatoprost is used to treat high pressure inside the eye due to glaucoma (open-angle type) or other eye diseases (such as ocular hypertension). Lowering high pressure inside the eye can help prevent blindness. This medication may work by helping fluid inside the eye to flow out, which lowers pressure inside the eye.

This implant may be placed only one time in each eye.

How to use

This medication implant is placed in the eye(s) by a health care professional. After it is placed, stay upright for at least 1 hour so the implant can settle in place.

Most people with glaucoma or high pressure in the eye do not have symptoms. To monitor the effect of this medication implant, keep all medical appointments with your doctor.

Side effects

Eye redness, swelling, discomfort, dry eye, blurred vision, and a feeling of a foreign body in the eye may occur after the procedure. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

This medication may slowly (over months to years) cause brown discoloration of the colored portion of the eye (iris). If you are using this product in only one eye, only that iris may change color. These changes may be permanent, but the long-term effects are unknown. Tell your doctor if this occurs, and schedule regular eye exams to monitor it.

Remember that this medication has been prescribed because your doctor has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including:

  • vision changes
  • increased eye pain/swelling/sensitivity to light

This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
