I was born and raised in San Diego, California. I chose to become a physician because I wanted a career that would allow me to use my strengths to help others, which is something I find very satisfying. At the Oregon Health Sciences University, I trained in general surgery with a surgeon who was born and raised on the Big Island of Hawaii. He convinced me to move to Kona, Hawaii where I built a private practice with my own surgical center. After over 10 years of successful but isolated private practice in Kona, I embraced the opportunity to work with a group of highly educated colleagues in the intellectually stimulating setting of the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group (HPMG).
Although I initially aspired to be a trauma surgeon, I was very impressed during my residency training with the plastic surgeons who managed burns, hand injuries and facial trauma as well as performed a wide variety of reconstructive procedures. So following my six year general surgery residency, I decided to pursue a plastic surgery career and completed another two years of training where my artistic talents could blend with the science of surgery. My philosophy of care is to strive to provide the absolute best care I am capable of for each patient and always keep patient safety a first priority. Working for our medical group allows me to focus on patient care without having to worry about running a business. I find it incredibly beneficial to work with such a large group of physicians who are there to help and support our patients. I am a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and past board member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
Surfing and exercising regularly help me to stay fit. I also enjoy hiking, skiing, and snowboarding. I enjoy the arts and love to travel. Keeping up with my kids, both physically and mentally, is a daily challenge.
