About me

I am originally from Pennsylvania, where I was raised on a farm 30 miles east of Pittsburgh. During medical school in Kansas City, I joined the United States Army. After residency in Washington D.C., there was a request for a neurologist at Tripler Army Medical Center and I was quick to volunteer. It was a privilege to care for the active duty members and veterans from many wars.

About my practice

My mother was a nurse and I volunteered at her hospital during high school. She inspired me to enter the medical field. During medical school I enjoyed my neuroanatomy class, and the brain and its workings continue to fascinate me. For me the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group is the best way to practice medicine as we are all on the same team, that of caring for our patients. I strive to keep current on the neurological literature in order to formulate solutions for neurological problems.I am an assistant clinical professor at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine. I serve on the Board of Directors of the Hawaii Neurological Society and the Board of Directors of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Hawaii Division. I am also on the Community Board of my windward neighborhood. At Kaiser Permanente, I am on the Concussion Taskforce and Multiple Sclerosis Taskforce. My courageous patients who struggle with various neurological issues inspire me daily. I work with them through their challenges and we share not just tears but laughter as well. I also enjoy patient education and often give lectures in the community.

How I thrive

In my time off I enjoy making soups, baking, and anything to do with Scrabble®. My perfect day would be a hike on one of our verdant Hawaiian trails followed by a night dive. Being from Pittsburgh, I am a diehard Steelers and Penguins fan, and I also enjoy attending my kids' sporting events. Every two years my four best high school friends and I meet for a getaway to "relive the glory days," which is relaxing and rejuvenating.

Kaiser Permanente uses the same quality, member experience, or cost-related measures to select practitioners and facilities in Marketplace Silver-tier plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business and uses the same geographic distribution consideration to select hospitals in Marketplace plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business. The measures may include, but are not limited to, HEDIS/CAHPS performance, member/patient complaints, patient safety scores, hospital quality measures, and geographic need. Members enrolled in KFHP Marketplace plans have access to all professional, institutional and ancillary health care providers who participate in KFHP plans' contracted provider network, in accordance with the terms of the members' KFHP plan of coverage. All Kaiser Permanente Medical Group physicians and network physicians are subject to the same quality review processes and certifications.

A narrow network is defined as a tailored, tiered or high-performance network that has 80 percent or less overlap with a health plan’s broadest network offered to a member in any type of plan offered by that health plan. Kaiser Permanente does not have a narrow network with respect to its Marketplace plans. Members enrolled in Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) Marketplace plans have access to the same provider networks as members enrolled in all other KFHP plans.
