About me

While I was born and raised in southern Alabama, my schooling and education has sent me from one side of the country to the other. I graduated from Yale University with a degree in biomedical engineering and became interested in medicine during a summer internship at the National Institutes of Health. After a brief stent as a ski instructor in Lake Tahoe, I began my medical training at the University of Alabama School of Medicine. Ophthalmology's focus on improving the quality of life for patients was immediately appealing, and my mentors helped foster my interest. I completed my ophthalmology residency at the Cleveland Clinic, serving as chief resident. I furthered my training with a fellowship in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. I consider myself very lucky to be able to do what I do and help my patients. The face is how people identify themselves and others, and I understand the gravity of working in an area that is always on display. I am humbled by accolades and awards I have received in medicine, but the best reward is a happy patient.

About my practice

I always try to focus on establishing collaborative relationships with our members. When physician and patient can work together as a team with a common goal, outcomes are maximized. On my first day of residency, I learned the primary guiding principle for good medical practice: patients first. I strive to echo that sentiment in all aspects of my work. As an oculoplastic surgeon, my practice has a wide scope. I treat droopy eyelids, eyelids rotated out or in, eyelid lesions, eyelid lacerations, blocked tear ducts, orbital trauma and fractures, traumatic reconstructions, thyroid eye disease, orbital tumors, periocular skin cancers and reconstructions, and numerous other conditions of the periocular area and face. I also have experience in cosmetic procedures of the upper face, such as botulinum toxin, fillers and cosmetic surgical procedures. At present, I am engaged in research on pediatric orbital trauma. I have previously published on surgical techniques for lacrimal and orbital surgery, autoimmune disease of the orbit and reconstructive techniques.

How I thrive

In a perfect world, I would find a way to practice medicine on a ski mountain. I have loved skiing since I was in grade school. There is something about the beauty and calm of the mountains combined with the exhilaration of carving up fresh powder. While there are no ski mountains in Atlanta, they are only a flight away. I do enjoy exploring the running trails around the city, and the Beltline is always a good way to start a weekend. Exercise is definitely something that keeps me going, both physically and mentally. I am a little bit of a self-proclaimed foodie. Trying new recipes and new ingredients is always fun - and most of the time tasty! I have a habit of trying to eat my way through a city, and I am always open to any good suggestions. I would say that I thrive by staying active in all senses of the word. There is always something new to experience and explore. Traveling is a great way to immerse in new things, but sometimes there is a surprising number of novel things to do close by. Sharing adventures with friends and friends-to-be just makes it better.

Kaiser Permanente uses the same quality, member experience, or cost-related measures to select providers and facilities in Marketplace Silver-tier plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business. The measures may include, but are not limited to, HEDIS/CAHPS performance, member/patient complaints, patient safety scores, hospital quality measures, and geographic need. Members enrolled in KFHP Marketplace plans have access to all professional, institutional and ancillary health care providers who participate in KFHP plans' contracted provider network, in accordance with the terms of the members' KFHP plan of coverage. All Kaiser Permanente Medical Group physicians and network physicians are subject to the same quality review processes and certifications.

Kaiser Permanente uses the same geographic distribution consideration to select hospitals in Marketplace plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business.
