Volunteer Opportunities at KP Northwest

We are looking for responsible and dedicated volunteers with a passion for helping others to join our health care teams.

Whether you want to give back to the community, have a passion around culturally sensitive health care, need to complete service hours, want to learn about health care roles as you plan your career path, or simply enjoy meeting new people and making new friends, our volunteer program offers many opportunities to fit your talents, skills, and interests.

Kaiser Permanente is committed to providing affordable high-quality health and life care. Our volunteers are a vital part of our mission to improve the health of our community.

Our options include:

Our clinics are outpatient medical settings where members are arriving for multiple health care needs: a doctor’s visit, Urgent Care, a same-day procedure, pharmacy pickup, or a stop at the eye care center for an all-in-one experience. Volunteering within a clinic is a unique look into the Kaiser Permanente health care model and a way for you to give back directly to the community closest to you.

Clinic volunteer roles are available in Primary Care, Specialty Care, and Urgent Care locations across Oregon and SW Washington. Shifts are available Monday through Friday and some weekend days, depending on the site. Clinic volunteers must be at least 16 years old.
Volunteers must be able to make a weekly commitment for 6 months, in most roles.

Are you looking for a volunteer opportunity that engages your heart, mind, and spirit in caring for people? Hospice volunteers provide direct support to patients and families in their homes while they face a life-limiting illness. Volunteers can have a profound impact at a time when a person is nearing the end of their life, when heartfelt one-on-one connection is often crucial.

Hold a hand. Be a presence. Join the Kaiser Permanente hospice volunteer team to provide support to families and patients. Hospice volunteers are needed to provide: respite to a family caregiver in the home, friendly companionship to patients residing in facility settings, or help with tasks that enable a person with their goal to stay in their home.

Volunteers go through a multistep process to get on board, including screening and training. We ask for a one-year commitment for up to 4 hours per week. Volunteers need to be at least 18 years old.

Patient Advisory Councils

A Patient Advisory Council is a representative group of Kaiser Permanente members who meet regularly for active collaboration between physicians, staff, and patients, families, and caregivers on policy and program decisions.

Volunteers provide feedback to Kaiser Permanente leaders on ways to improve the patient experience and patient care. Engagements are usually of a longer duration and have ongoing commitment. Reoccurring meeting times vary according to groups. All meetings are held either in person or online.

Characteristics of Patient Partners

  • Commitment to continuous improvement and finding opportunities
  • Positive attitude about Kaiser Permanente
  • Ability to share experience and insight in a balanced and objective way
  • Ability to listen to and reflect on differing points of view
  • Ability to work well with others in a collaborative manner
  • Ability to keep information confidential
  • Curiosity and an open mind
  • Good sense of humor

Listening Sessions

A listening session is like a focus group in that it’s a type of facilitated discussion with a group of volunteers. The goal of listening sessions is collecting information about volunteers’ experiences in a certain area or on a certain topic. Participants in a listening session are asked to talk about their personal experiences, reflect on what others are contributing, and engage in productive dialogue. Listening sessions are usually small groups but may be structured for a one-on-one discussion. Commitments are short term and can be attended via video meeting or in person.

Characteristics of Listening Session Volunteers

  • Positive attitude about Kaiser Permanente
  • Ability to share experience and insight in a balanced and objective way
  • Ability to keep information confidential

Selection Process

The selection process depends on the type of involvement:

  • If it is an informal and short-term activity, members do not necessarily need to be screened, but may be selected from a sample or pool.
  • If it is a formal and long-term activity, particularly if there is involvement on any teams, committees, or councils where you may hear confidential information, observe processes, or walk around the hospital floor, then members will need to be selected and properly screened. This includes a completed background check, health questionnaire, and signed consent to participate documentation.
  • Must be a Kaiser Permanente member
  • Cannot be a current employee or spouse of current employee of Kaiser Permanente, Northwest Permanente, or Permanente Dental Associates.
