Counseling and Program services

The HIV/AIDS Resources and Counseling Department (HARC) is a multi-disciplinary team of health professionals providing support services to Kaiser Members who have HIV disease and to those seeking testing and information regarding sexually transmitted infections.

The department works with medical sub-specialists to provide medical advice, assistance with medical and pharmacy services, testing for HIV and STD infection, education, licensed therapeutic counseling, referral to outside services, and assistance to maintain medical plan membership and financial assistance. Patients may self refer.

The Admitting Department is an integral part of the intake of patients to our hospital. We handle all the registration, paperwork, prescreening and outside insurance approval processes.

The After Hours Care clinic is an appointment-only clinic for adults in the Department of Medicine after office hours (5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.) and on weekends.

If you require prompt medical attention, usually within 24 to 48 hours, but is not an emergency medical condition, you can make a regular appointment during the day or request an after-hours or weekend appointment. Examples of urgent needs that can be treated after hours or on weekends:
Sore throat, cough, and upper respiratory symptoms (please wear a mask), earache, backache, frequent urination or burning sensation when urinating. 

If you have an emergency, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room.

The emergency department at South San Francisco Medical Center is open 24/7, including holidays, and is located at 1200 El Camino Real, South San Francisco, CA 94080.

We specialize in the evaluation and treatment of children and adults with allergies, asthma, and related immunologic disorders.  We offer allergy skin testing, injection therapy, and pulmonary function testing. 

If testing is done at your appointment, the appointment may take up to 2 hours.  Please allow time in your schedule for this.  If this is not possible, we will schedule a separate appointment for allergy testing.

In preparation for skin testing, please do not take any antihistamines for 5 days prior to your appointment.  During skin testing, a small amount of antigen/allergen is placed on either your lower arm or upper back with a disposable plastic pricking device.  Once the test is applied, you will be asked to wait in our waiting room for 20 minutes before the nurse records your results.  This waiting time may be used to view an educational allergy video or administer a treatment if necessary. A parent or guardian must be present for the entire appointment if you are under 18.

If you are unable to stop your antihistamines due to hives or severe allergy symptoms, please let us know.  In some cases, allergy testing can be done by blood tests even if you have had an antihistamine the same day.

Although our interaction with you and your family members is usually measured in hours, versus the weeks or years you may spend with other providers who care for you, this short timeframe is very important to us. Our goals are to instill confidence that we will be there to shepherd you through this period and deliver the superior service and quality of care that we all want and need for our well-being.

To achieve these goals we have assembled a skilled and caring team that includes board-certified anesthesiologists and certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs). 

In preparation for your surgery, our care begins with a pre-operative consultation that includes an assessment of your medical condition and anesthesia history. This appointment is usually scheduled a few days in advance of your surgery (for urgent situations this can be done immediately prior to your surgery). Anesthesia options, risks, and benefits are discussed with you at this time.

We offer audiological evaluations for patients of all ages. We are a sub-department of Head and Neck Surgery. 

Our experts are dedicated to providing the highest level of care, preparation, surgery, and post-recovery care possible for surgery of severely obese members from across Northern California. 

Weight loss surgery is an option for people with severe obesity who cannot lose weight by other means. The surgery reduces the size of the patient’s stomach. 

We provide extensive pre-testing and evaluation, physical / medical, dietary, and psychological, comprehensive patient education and support prior to surgery, and our highly trained surgeons, nurses, nutritionists, and physical therapists who are all experts in treating these special patients including long-term post-surgery support and assistance to maintain healthy eating and activity.

We specialize in the evaluation and treatment of burns less than 15% of total body surface area, and without inhalation injuries.

If a patient has a more servere burn we will refer to a higher-level specialty burn center, such as for:

• Burns greater than 10% today body in a child or 15% total body in an adult
• Electrical burns
• Burns complicated by inhalation injuries and/or fractures
• Deep second- and third-degree burns involving critical areas, e.g., hands, face, feet and genitalia
• Significant burns involving patients with major psychiatric disorders
• Some burns in infants with underlying medical or psychosocial needs

The Nutrition Clinic offers board-certified specialists in nutrition, diet, and diseases. Our Registered Dietitians have additional board-certified specialties in areas such as diabetes, kidney disease, and nutrition support.

We work closely with your doctor, nurse practitioner, pharmacist, or care manager to provide a plan tailored to your individual needs.

Fresh food every day
Our Nutrition and Food Services Department offers a wide variety of menu choices, including vegetarian options, high fiber foods, and selections with less salt and fat, which contribute to the health and wellness of our hospitalized patients. Some foods will be modified when your physician has ordered a therapeutic diet. This means you may be served a lower fat or lower salt food selection.

We are proud to offer you sustainably grown, organic and/or local vegetables from small family farms when available. In addition, we serve sustainable cage-free eggs which are lower in fat and cholesterol, milk and yogurt that are free of added hormones, and beef burgers and chicken breasts from animals that were raised without antibiotics.

If you are a runner looking to address nagging injuries, or you want to improve your running performance to achieve higher goals, the Run Clinic is here to help. There is a fee, please call the numbers below to inquire about current pricing.

The Run Clinic is ideal for members who are currently running and having only mild aches or pains. More severe pains or injuries should be evaluated by your doctor. We offer physical and visual assessment for beginning to competitive runners. A Sports Physical Therapist will perform a one-on-one assessment that takes about an hour. The Run Clinic is offered on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. Please wear all of your usual running gear.

The Physical Therapist will explain your report, including flexibility and lower extremity and core strength, making specific exercise recommendations to improve your problem areas. Video analysis while running on treadmill will inform recommendations on how to improve your form.
