Tammara S. Stefanelli, MD
I speak: English
My gender: Female
Where I practice
I was born in Omaha, Nebraska and raised in Hastings, which is a few hours west of Omaha. After moving around the country during our medical training, my husband and I were eager to try something new. When we received the opportunity to join the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group (HPMG), we knew it would be a wonderful move not just for our careers, but for our family as well. The idea of belonging to a cohesive group of physicians and providers who enjoy what they do really appealed to me. My husband Chris Stefanelli is a pediatric cardiologist, also with HPMG. We have three sons and a little girl whom we recently adopted from Korea.
About my practice
While I’m not sure what originally influenced me to go into medicine, I remember that I made the decision in high school and never looked back. Family medicine has such a broad scope and provides me with opportunities to do a lot of different things that I enjoy. I enjoy working with all ages, from newborns to adolescents to seniors. I do routine gynecology care and hope to be able to manage all aspects of care for my patients. I have also enjoyed getting to know families and being able to treat all members of the family. I’m a firm believer in working collaboratively with my patients on their treatment. As a physician, I understand that medical care is not always about “medicine” and “procedures.” I lean towards a holistic model of care, recognizing the different approaches to treatment and focusing on prevention and psychosocial well-being. Additionally, I really listen to my patients to get to know them, and I can treat them more appropriately as a result. Through these interactions, my patients and I can work together better to achieve their optimal health.
How I thrive
Exercising is incredibly important to me. I feel that it’s the mainstay in helping me to be mentally and physically healthy. I especially enjoy running and yoga, but take part in all sorts of sports and outdoor activities, especially with my family. My family takes up the majority of my time outside of work. We have enjoyed our move to Hawaii and like being in such a beautiful place that has such a strong focus on the outdoors and family values.
