I was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and raised in Wailuku, Maui. While I was growing up, my grandparents were a major influence on my development, and they always stressed the importance of giving back to the community. I feel very fortunate that I’ve been able to return to my Maui home, where I strive to honor their wishes.
During my college years I volunteered at the Los Angeles County coroner’s office. While I was in medical school at the University of Southern California, I was exposed to the challenges involved in providing care for the underserved and uninsured in one of the largest and most diverse cities in the U.S. My interest in working with this population continued through my residency in primary care at the UC Davis Medical Center and still guides my practice today. Upon completion of my training, I practiced medicine in the territory of Guam for more than a year as a representative of the National Health Service Corps. This provided me with invaluable experience working in a remote and extremely underserved region of the world. The medical profession allows me to learn new things every day. In my specialty I’m fortunate to see different facets of medicine in a wide range of settings. I’m particularly interested in Hansen’s Disease and HIV/AIDS.My professional affiliations include membership in the American College of Physicians, and I’m a National Health Service Corps scholar.I stay current on internal medicine topics by reading professional journals, attending medical conferences, participating in continuing medical education programs, and consulting with my peers. My philosophy of care is to listen, connect, understand, and serve. I enjoy “talking story” with my patients and getting to know them personally in addition to addressing their diagnoses and treatment plans. This allows me to better consider the whole person and not just the medical condition.
When I’m away from work, I unwind and recharge by spending time with my family and my dogs. I also enjoy cooking and going to the beach, and I’m a Fantasy Football fanatic!
