Where I practice
I was born and raised in Fort Collins, Colorado, where I lived until I was 24 years old. After watching my sister go through end-stage renal disease at the age of 18 and receiving a kidney from our father, I decided to pursue a career in medicine. My goal was to learn everything I could to be able to provide better care for my sister. When I was at the New York Medical College, I met my future wife, a flight attendant whose family was originally from Hong Kong. For my residency I moved to the San Francisco Bay area, did my internship and residency at the Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center, and finally ended up coming to beautiful Hawaii to live and practice medicine.
About my practice
Originally I had planned to become a nephrologist, a specialist who deals with kidney problems. As I went through my residency, however, I found that I wanted to utilize the knowledge I was gaining in treating a broad range of patients, rather than just those with a specific ailment. I therefore made the decision to specialize in hospital medicine. The intellectual challenge of this field is exciting to me each and every day.
To stay current in developments in the field of medicine, I use online resources such and read professional journals. I also confer with colleagues and participate in continuing medical education programs.
During my internship and residency at Kaiser Permanente Oakland, I could see that the Permanente Medical Groups provided amazing care. The collaborative and supportive way the physicians worked together impressed me, especially the great camaraderie between specialists and primary care physicians. Also, the amazing electronic medical record system made referrals to specialists smoother, decreased wasteful repeat studies, and created a more comfortable experience for patients.
I believe that the care the physician provides should be based on evidence and the latest scientific findings, customized for the individual patient.
How I thrive
To stay fit physically, I exercise on a daily basis. I especially enjoy running, weightlifting, and bicycling. I also like to take advantage of the many outdoor activities Hawaii has to offer.
