About me

Born in North Dakota, I graduated from Arizona State University before earning my physician assistant degree with honors from the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. I later received a Doctor of Medical Science from the University of Lynchburg in Virginia and a Certificate of Professional Achievement in Narrative Medicine from Columbia University in New York City. While at Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park, I was recognized for outstanding clinical performance and patient satisfaction. I’ve also been inducted into the Physician Assistant Education Association's national honor society and serve as an adjunct professor at Hawaiʻi Pacific University, where I help educate and mentor future physician assistants.

Family has always been central to my life, and a commitment to health and service runs through several generations. My mother and grandmother were nurses, and two of my daughters followed them into nursing. One is a registered nurse, and the other is a nurse practitioner. Another daughter is an emergency medicine physician, while my son chose a career in private equity. We’ve also lived our commitment to helping others through medical mission work and a strong focus on healthy living.

I was drawn to Maui by its wonderful climate, magical sunrises and sunsets, and the pervasive feeling of aloha. I feel deeply grateful to be providing care to this island community.

About my practice

Growing up in a family of medical professionals showed me how meaningful a career centered on compassion and service can be. I was drawn to health care because it allows me to listen to people’s stories and help them take an active role in their health through prevention and education.

Internal medicine appealed to me because it allows me to build long-term relationships and care for the whole person, not just a single diagnosis. I enjoy the detective work of listening closely, connecting the pieces, and understanding how a patient’s history, lifestyle, and medical conditions come together. I also value Kaiser Permanente’s collaborative approach, with physicians, specialists, pharmacists, nurses, and staff working together to provide high-quality care.

I have a strong interest in narrative medicine, which uses patients’ stories, literature, and reflective writing to understand the person behind the diagnosis better and strengthen patient-centered care. I’ve presented and published on narrative medicine, prevention, and patient-centered care, with work appearing in the Journal of Narrative Visions, The Examined Life Journal, and the Journal of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, where I have also served as a reviewer. My other professional interests include wellness, chronic disease, obesity and weight management, and medical education. I’m also the author of the children’s book “If I Were a Pumpkin.”

How I thrive

I practice what I preach by staying active, nurturing meaningful relationships, making room for the things that bring joy and purpose, maintaining balance, and finding gratitude in the connection between health and everyday life. I enjoy hiking, pickleball, cooking nutritious meals, experiencing the beauty of Maui, sitting by the ocean, and gathering around the table with my husband, children, grandchildren, and friends. Another favorite activity is travel, which teaches me to respect different ways of life.

Kaiser Permanente uses the same quality, member experience, or cost-related measures to select practitioners and facilities in Marketplace Silver-tier plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business and uses the same geographic distribution consideration to select hospitals in Marketplace plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business. The measures may include, but are not limited to, HEDIS/CAHPS performance, member/patient complaints, patient safety scores, hospital quality measures, and geographic need. Members enrolled in KFHP Marketplace plans have access to all professional, institutional and ancillary health care providers who participate in KFHP plans' contracted provider network, in accordance with the terms of the members' KFHP plan of coverage. All Kaiser Permanente Medical Group physicians and network physicians are subject to the same quality review processes and certifications.

A narrow network is defined as a tailored, tiered or high-performance network that has 80 percent or less overlap with a health plan’s broadest network offered to a member in any type of plan offered by that health plan. Kaiser Permanente does not have a narrow network with respect to its Marketplace plans. Members enrolled in Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) Marketplace plans have access to the same provider networks as members enrolled in all other KFHP plans.
