About me

I am first generation Filipino-American and was raised in Long Beach, California. In Hawaii I found a strong sense of community created by the aloha and ohana spirit that I had not felt in other places I had lived. Also wanting my children to experience the rich Filipino heritage existing in the islands, I made the decision to settle here.

About my practice

My decision to pursue a medical career resulted from several fortunate events in my life. My mother is a registered nurse, and as a child I would walk to the hospital where she worked to do my homework after school. Back then hospital policies allowed me to wander around and watch what was going on in the ICU, the ER, and other areas. When I was nine years old, I was also fortunate to take a summer enrichment course in anatomy at the local junior college and was fascinated by what I learned. After high school I served as a medic in the U.S. Air Force, where I enjoyed responding to mass casualty incidents. By then I knew that I wanted to become a health care provider. Occupational health and urgent care are disciplines that challenge my abilities to reason, react, and make decisions. They also involve numerous aspects of medicine, and this allows me the opportunity to interact with other specialists. My professional affiliations include membership in the California Association of Physician Assistants and the American Association of Physician Assistants. I am also a fellow of the Hawaii Association of Physician Assistants. I have spoken at various governmental and employment organizations in the San Diego area on the topics of communicable and exposure illnesses such as the viral hepatitis diseases, HIV, TB, and influenza contracted in the workplace. In addition to English I speak Spanish fluently, and I understand spoken Tagalog. Attending professional conferences helps me stay up-to-date with developments in my field and other areas, including occupational medicine, primary and ambulatory care, and orthopedics. During my medical training I did several academic rotations with the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group (HPMG). HPMG’s highly competent staff, the services readily provided to patients, and the group’s organizational structure all were very pleasing to me, and I decided that this was where I wanted to practice. It is my belief that if patients are presented with appropriate, reasonable, and realistic treatment options, they will become more proactive and feel empowered to make decisions about their care. I look forward to hearing how my patients’ personal experiences have influenced their lives. I strive to convey my sincere interest in them as individuals first, rather than as patients with an illnesses or medical record number.

How I thrive

To stay balanced, I exercise daily and spend time in the outdoors. My family and I enjoy activities at the ocean and in the mountains. I also participate in contact sports and coach youth athletic teams.

Accommodations for Individuals with Disabilities

Kaiser Permanente is committed to providing accessible facilities, services, and programs for all members, visitors and individuals with disabilities. In compliance with federal and state laws that prohibit discrimination based on disability, Kaiser Permanente provides:

  1. accessible exam rooms and medical equipment;
  2. free auxiliary aids and services to ensure effective communication with individuals with hearing, vision, cognitive, and/or communication-related disabilities, including qualified sign language interpreter services and informational materials in alternative formats (large print, audio tape/CDs, accessible PDFs or Microsoft Word documents, electronic texts/disks/CD-ROMS, and Braille); and
  3. access to service animals, except where the animal poses a significant health or safety risk(s) to others.

For more information about access to a specific facility or provider, or if you believe that Kaiser Permanente has failed to provide appropriate access or services or otherwise discriminated on the basis of a disability, please contact Member Services toll-free 1-800-966-5955 or TTY 711, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. or Saturday, 8 a.m. – noon. You may also contact or file a grievance with the Kaiser Permanente Civil Rights Coordinator in person, by mail, fax or email at: 711 Kapiolani Blvd, Honolulu, Hawaii 96813,, or toll-free 1-800-966-5955, TTY 711.

The availability and use of the Kaiser Permanente grievance procedure does not prevent a person from filing a complaint of discrimination on the basis of disability with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office for Civil Rights or the Hawaii Civil Rights Commission.

Kaiser Permanente uses the same quality, member experience, or cost-related measures to select practitioners and facilities in Marketplace Silver-tier plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business and uses the same geographic distribution consideration to select hospitals in Marketplace plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business. The measures may include, but are not limited to, HEDIS/CAHPS performance, member/patient complaints, patient safety scores, hospital quality measures, and geographic need. Members enrolled in KFHP Marketplace plans have access to all professional, institutional and ancillary health care providers who participate in KFHP plans' contracted provider network, in accordance with the terms of the members' KFHP plan of coverage. All Kaiser Permanente Medical Group physicians and network physicians are subject to the same quality review processes and certifications.

A narrow network is defined as a tailored, tiered or high-performance network that has 80 percent or less overlap with a health plan’s broadest network offered to a member in any type of plan offered by that health plan. Kaiser Permanente does not have a narrow network with respect to its Marketplace plans. Members enrolled in Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) Marketplace plans have access to the same provider networks as members enrolled in all other KFHP plans.
