About me
I grew up in Berkeley, California, a vibrant college town. I am the fourth and youngest in my family. My parents met as students at the University of California, Berkeley, and were married just before my father shipped out to serve in the Army during World War II. After the war they decided to settle in Berkeley and raise their family. I went to college at the University of California, San Diego, and did graduate study at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, before entering medical school in Syracuse, New York. I met my future wife, who is from the Seattle area, when we were both students at Cornell. After I completed my residency, we decided that we wanted to raise our family in Western Washington.
About my practice
I think the first thing that got me thinking about medicine was the character of Dr. McCoy in the original Star Trek series. I love the relationships I have with patients over many years. I have had the pleasure of watching children grow up and young adults evolve into middle age. I have also had the honor of caring for old friends as they reach the end of their lives. I want to understand my patients concerns and their preferences for treatment, and then work with them to find a solution that aligns with their values. I have served as the local diabetes expert for the Olympia clinic for a number of years.
How I thrive
I enjoy running, kayaking, and hiking, and run or do some other form of aerobic exercise most days. I keep myself in good shape by eating the healthy food my wonderful wife prepares for me. We enjoy playing games and visiting national parks in the U.S. and abroad.

How we choose our network providers and hospitals
Kaiser Permanente uses the same quality, member experience, or cost-related measures to select practitioners and facilities in Marketplace Silver-tier plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business, and uses the same geographic distribution consideration to select hospitals in Marketplace plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business. The measures may include, but are not limited to, HEDIS/CAHPS performance, member/patient complaints, patient safety scores, hospital quality measures, and geographic need. Members enrolled in KFHP Marketplace plans have access to all professional, institutional and ancillary health care providers who participate in KFHP plans' contracted provider network, in accordance with the terms of the members' KFHP plan of coverage. All Kaiser Permanente Medical Group physicians and network physicians are subject to the same quality review processes and certifications.
A narrow network is defined as a tailored, tiered, or high-performance network that has 80 percent or less overlap with a health plan’s broadest network offered to a member in any type of plan offered by that health plan. Kaiser Permanente does not have a narrow network with respect to its Marketplace plans. Members enrolled in Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) Marketplace plans have access to the same provider networks as members enrolled in all other KFHP plans.
Search Tips
- Can’t find your provider? Additional facilities can be found by searching under Locations.
- Check your spelling.
- Broaden your search by using fewer words or more general words.
- Remove any location information from the search terms box.
- Search by practitioner name (ex. ‘John Smith’ instead of ‘Steel City Chiropractic Group’).
- Try searching by specialty.
