About me

I'm a native of the Northwest, having grown up in a rural community in Eastern Oregon. I studied at the University of Oregon and then Oregon Health Sciences University. I've also lived in the Midwest for residency training and in Mexico for two years - but the mountains of the Northwest drew me back. My wife is a native of Mexico; we've been married since 1993, and our three children are bilingual.

About my practice

As an undergraduate, I studied political science, focusing on the politics of the developing world. At some point, I realized I was interested in helping to solve "people" problems. I was always interested in biology, so I decided to study medicine. To do my job well, I have to understand how my patients define health to help them work toward their goals. I share my appreciation of outdoor activities to help motivate my patients. Diabetes management is an area of particular interest. Apart from this, I enjoy providing care over a broad spectrum, though I no longer deliver babies. The science of what I do is interesting, but the relationships I build with patients over time are what matter most.

How I thrive

Exercise is a huge priority. The seasons determine what I can do, but I run and ride my bike to and from work when weather allows. I tend to set particular goals (a marathon or a mountain I wish to climb) and then plan an activity to prepare. I love music and have played guitar for most of my life. Given my family connections to Mexico, we enjoy spending time there. Though travel is fun, I'm truly a homebody and most enjoy working in my garden or doing other projects around the home, like woodworking.

How we choose our network providers and hospitals

Kaiser Permanente uses the same quality, member experience, or cost-related measures to select practitioners and facilities in Marketplace Silver-tier plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business, and uses the same geographic distribution consideration to select hospitals in Marketplace plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business. The measures may include, but are not limited to, HEDIS/CAHPS performance, member/patient complaints, patient safety scores, hospital quality measures, and geographic need. Members enrolled in KFHP Marketplace plans have access to all professional, institutional and ancillary health care providers who participate in KFHP plans' contracted provider network, in accordance with the terms of the members' KFHP plan of coverage. All Kaiser Permanente Medical Group physicians and network physicians are subject to the same quality review processes and certifications.

A narrow network is defined as a tailored, tiered, or high-performance network that has 80 percent or less overlap with a health plan’s broadest network offered to a member in any type of plan offered by that health plan. Kaiser Permanente does not have a narrow network with respect to its Marketplace plans. Members enrolled in Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) Marketplace plans have access to the same provider networks as members enrolled in all other KFHP plans.

Search Tips

  • Can’t find your provider? Additional facilities can be found by searching under Locations.
  • Check your spelling.
  • Broaden your search by using fewer words or more general words.
  • Remove any location information from the search terms box.
  • Search by practitioner name (ex. ‘John Smith’ instead of ‘Steel City Chiropractic Group’).
  • Try searching by specialty.
