About me

I spent my early years in New Jersey before moving to the San Francisco Bay Area where I completed high school. I did my undergrad education at San Jose State University, and optometry school and training at University of California, Berkeley. I'm married, and my wife is a retired registered nurse. We have a son and daughter, both married, and each has a young son.

About my practice

I've always worked in hospitals, initially as a janitor, then as a laboratory phlebotomist. I enjoyed talking to the patients, hearing the stories they were willing to share, and combining that with my growing interest in human biological sciences. I love combining my interest in science and medicine with the needs of those I serve. I've volunteered eye care for the homeless, and I enjoy mentoring our residency-trained optometrists. I work with patients of all ages. I try to be a good listener and provide straightforward, honest responses, even when my diagnosis may be troubling. I came here from private practice and found that I enjoyed the interaction with my physician colleagues in offering integrated, seamless health care. I believe this model offers the best care at an affordable cost.

How I thrive

I enjoy frequent exercise. I was a competitive runner, so cardiovascular exercise has always been important in keeping me healthy and getting to spend time by myself. Doing physical activities with family and friends is also very satisfying. I enjoy cooking, trying new recipes and foods, and eating reasonably healthy. I have an avid interest in travel, regularly touring the back roads on my bike, hiking, and body surfing. I also like photography and, if not this but my next life, to be a good blues harmonica musician. Finally, I'm a passionate CAL football and basketball fan.

How we choose our network providers and hospitals

Kaiser Permanente uses the same quality, member experience, or cost-related measures to select practitioners and facilities in Marketplace Silver-tier plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business, and uses the same geographic distribution consideration to select hospitals in Marketplace plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business. The measures may include, but are not limited to, HEDIS/CAHPS performance, member/patient complaints, patient safety scores, hospital quality measures, and geographic need. Members enrolled in KFHP Marketplace plans have access to all professional, institutional and ancillary health care providers who participate in KFHP plans' contracted provider network, in accordance with the terms of the members' KFHP plan of coverage. All Kaiser Permanente Medical Group physicians and network physicians are subject to the same quality review processes and certifications.

A narrow network is defined as a tailored, tiered, or high-performance network that has 80 percent or less overlap with a health plan’s broadest network offered to a member in any type of plan offered by that health plan. Kaiser Permanente does not have a narrow network with respect to its Marketplace plans. Members enrolled in Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) Marketplace plans have access to the same provider networks as members enrolled in all other KFHP plans.

Search Tips

  • Can’t find your provider? Additional facilities can be found by searching under Locations.
  • Check your spelling.
  • Broaden your search by using fewer words or more general words.
  • Remove any location information from the search terms box.
  • Search by practitioner name (ex. ‘John Smith’ instead of ‘Steel City Chiropractic Group’).
  • Try searching by specialty.
