About me
I grew up in Seattle, and graduated from Ballard high school. I attended college at Seattle Pacific University, and medical school at the University of Washington. After residency in Colorado and California, I returned to the Seattle area. My husband grew up in Marysville, Washington, and is a civil engineer. We have three children, and two poorly behaved dogs. No one in my family was in the medical field. My grandparents, father, and uncles were halibut fisherman in Alaska. I was inspired to study medicine by my Sunday school teacher, who was a physician. I like science, and I like people. I thought medicine would provide a good mix of these two interests. I trained at UC Davis in California, and did half my clinical training in Kaiser Permanente hospitals. When I returned to Seattle, I started working part time with this organization while I raised my children.
About my practice
I practice hospice medicine, and love what I do. I feel very privileged that my patients and their families allow me to participate in their lives. Working with people as they near the end of their lives is a daily reminder to pay attention to things that really matter. Life is precious and short, and we need to make each day count. I enjoy working with older patients, and patients from different cultures. Their life stories are so interesting. I enjoy the flexibility of medicine, and knowing that we're just scratching the surface when it comes to how the body works.
How I thrive
Realizing how much I don't know about the world and other cultures keeps me motivated to continue learning. I teach English as a second language one evening a week. I studied German while in Germany, and I remember how difficult it was to learn a new language. My family is from Norway, and someday I would love to do a sabbatical there.

How we choose our network providers and hospitals
Kaiser Permanente uses the same quality, member experience, or cost-related measures to select practitioners and facilities in Marketplace Silver-tier plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business, and uses the same geographic distribution consideration to select hospitals in Marketplace plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business. The measures may include, but are not limited to, HEDIS/CAHPS performance, member/patient complaints, patient safety scores, hospital quality measures, and geographic need. Members enrolled in KFHP Marketplace plans have access to all professional, institutional and ancillary health care providers who participate in KFHP plans' contracted provider network, in accordance with the terms of the members' KFHP plan of coverage. All Kaiser Permanente Medical Group physicians and network physicians are subject to the same quality review processes and certifications.
A narrow network is defined as a tailored, tiered, or high-performance network that has 80 percent or less overlap with a health plan’s broadest network offered to a member in any type of plan offered by that health plan. Kaiser Permanente does not have a narrow network with respect to its Marketplace plans. Members enrolled in Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) Marketplace plans have access to the same provider networks as members enrolled in all other KFHP plans.
