About me

I was born in the South and grew up in the Midwest. After completing a medical residency, I trained in cardiology in Missouri. I have a wonderful, supportive wife and two children. My daughter is a type 1 diabetic and was diagnosed when she was two and I was in training. Her diagnosis and ongoing care have been a way for me to see the medical field through my patients' eyes. I was drawn to medicine for many reasons that began when I was six years old and my father had a heart attack in front of me. Secondly, I trained as an engineer before I entered medical school and ended up designing devices to assist minimally invasive cardiac interventions. And finally, a great mentor and lifelong friend, Dr. Marc Penn, took me on as a trainee in his lab at the Cleveland Clinic where I went to medical school. The work I did with him solidified my decision to train in cardiology.

Biography

I appreciate Kaiser Permanente's emphasis on evidence-based practice, outcomes and thoughtful clinical care. My approach to patient care focuses on being up to date on cutting-edge treatments for heart disease and making joint decisions with my patients after I have done my utmost to inform them of the available courses of action. I enjoy caring for patients with advanced congestive heart failure and trying my best to make sure we have explored all available treatment options. I enjoy the challenge and intellectual rigor of learning and retaining medical knowledge, especially in a field (cardiology) that has accumulated an immense amount of information to contribute to the evidence-based literature.

About my practice

My hobbies are fly fishing, traveling and hiking through the amazing nature present in the Northwest. I also enjoy reading across of a spectrum of issues. To keep myself well, I do my best to maintain an exercise regimen that combines resistance exercises with cardiovascular endurance exercises. I recently took up grilling and am trying to combine this new skill with adhering to a Mediterranean diet.

How we choose our network providers and hospitals

Kaiser Permanente uses the same quality, member experience, or cost-related measures to select practitioners and facilities in Marketplace Silver-tier plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business, and uses the same geographic distribution consideration to select hospitals in Marketplace plans as it does for all other Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) products and lines of business. The measures may include, but are not limited to, HEDIS/CAHPS performance, member/patient complaints, patient safety scores, hospital quality measures, and geographic need. Members enrolled in KFHP Marketplace plans have access to all professional, institutional and ancillary health care providers who participate in KFHP plans' contracted provider network, in accordance with the terms of the members' KFHP plan of coverage. All Kaiser Permanente Medical Group physicians and network physicians are subject to the same quality review processes and certifications.

A narrow network is defined as a tailored, tiered, or high-performance network that has 80 percent or less overlap with a health plan’s broadest network offered to a member in any type of plan offered by that health plan. Kaiser Permanente does not have a narrow network with respect to its Marketplace plans. Members enrolled in Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) Marketplace plans have access to the same provider networks as members enrolled in all other KFHP plans.

Search Tips

  • Can’t find your provider? Additional facilities can be found by searching under Locations.
  • Check your spelling.
  • Broaden your search by using fewer words or more general words.
  • Remove any location information from the search terms box.
  • Search by practitioner name (ex. ‘John Smith’ instead of ‘Steel City Chiropractic Group’).
  • Try searching by specialty.
